Parry Ratio doesn't increase your defense, but it increases the chance of someone hitting lower on you. E.g let's say a Mangyang has an attack of 20 ~ 30. The more parry you have the more likely it is to hit closer to 20 rather than 30. Whereas defense actually lowers the damage you take.

Lets start a discussion :)

A Person - Has no lightning mastery but full blue parry items and Fire mastery at 100 and Cold mastery at 100 (phy and mag deff buffs maxed except snowshield)

B Person - Fire mastery 100, Lightning mastery 80, Cold mastery 20 (Parry buff is maxed)

Both have 20% snow shield.

Which one does get lower damage from his enemies?

Parry > Phy and Mag deff

OR

Phy and Mag Deff > Parry

:)

defense makes the total range of dmg lower, whereas parry just makes sure the probability of hitting low increases.

Exactly. :P

We can't really discuss that, well, there are a lot of variables into this matter, but assuming both have same builds, both with white NPC set, one with 100 lightning, and the other with 100fire/100cold, both with only defensive buffs (parry ratio, mag def and phy def), assuming the damage from both would be the same magically and physically on a 0 def enemy, the one that would take lower damage overall would certainly be the one with 100fire/100cold. Just because rough defense will with 100% chance decrease the damage you receive, while parry ratio is somewhat based on luck. Maybe in a short PvP, if the one with 100lightning is really lucky, he might take all the time lower damage, but I still don't think it'd be less than the one with 100fire/100cold would take. Also, as a side note, the lightning imbue gives the status effect "shock" which reduces your enemy's parry ratio by HALF. I seriously don't notice a difference in damage after it.

So, for your answer: Physical and Magical Defense > Parry, overall.

Thanks for that long and decent explanation raphaell666. I have always thought that def > parry but as i have no chance to test that with exactly same two chars, I was not quite sure.

But here comes another question. I am a glaiver. My mastery choice for 100 cap is Heuksal 100, Fire 100, Cold 100. And If def > parry, I don't get why people chose Heuk100/fire100/light80/cold20 for a glaiver char. You do get a little parry, moving speed, a lame mag att pwr (for str chars).

Because if your a pure str char...most of them already have enough phys defense...from adding str points...they dont need that extra phys def..and most of them would rather have grasswalk/phantom/and parry/mag buff. With light you get 4 extra advantages, Cold only 1 phys defense..

Lightning gives you speed and mobility which are simply invaluable. Although the piercing force skill changes nothing at all, the speed (grass walk) and mobility (ghost walk) that lightning gives changes a whole damn lot at mainly jobbing/group pvping and grinding. It's completely utterly up to what YOU prefer anyways.

Lightning advantages for a pure STR:
  1. Grass walk;
  2. Ghost walk;
  3. Parry ratio.
Nothing else as you are a pure STR. The magical attack % buff actually changes nothing.

Cold advantages for a pure STR:
  1. Physical defense;
  2. Snow shield;
  3. Freezing/frostbiting (also with AoE) abilities;
  4. If maxed, extra useful imbue;
  5. Ice wall.

By the way, note that I'm not saying anywhere that cold is better. Both have it's very own advantages, it's up to the player to decide what he/she needs/wants.

you do notice a difference, but only on things with little defence, monsters for example.

lets say,2 seperate parties fight a respective pt giant,
2 teams, both 8 full int light force bladers
(just picture a full botter pt, all of them generated :roll:)
(light= high damage range, force: vital spot muscle debuff for parry decrease)
(why nuker?--> no criticals involved in the test)

:arrow: both teams use fire nukes, but one uses constant vital spot muscle

the party using vital spot muscle will increase the damage by only a few [%],
but with the large amount of hp and the connected large amount of hits needed,
the small[%] will be recognizable as the "vital spot" party kills the monster faster than the other team does.

and reversed: mobs hitting you
when you mass fight big groups of monsters for long periods of time and taking many hits, you will notice that you use slightly less pots with a bit more parry(most recognizable as a full str).

Of course fighting in pvp, parry is near to useless since defence is extremely high and fights are rather short.
And as for mobs: the buff is not worth the sp, just avoid getting into long fights
