Somebody used a cigarette lighter to start a fire on the namdaemun, which means south gate. The namdaemun is one gate of Seoul, and is one of its most representative landmarks. It was built 600 years ago when the Joseon dynasty (1342-1910 I think) was established. The namdaemun, in its original state, has gone through 600 years of Korean history, including the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592-1598), the Korean annexation of Japan in 1910, and the Korean War. It is a very lucky thing that this gate has existed and not been destroyed by the Chinese, Japanese or North Koreans for 600 years. Now, this National Treasure No. 1 of South Korea has been destroyed by an arson. I have personally been there before last year and it looked great and of course very big. This stone gate of Korea, this landmark of our capital, the soul of our nation has been burnt down. It hurts to see a piece of our history destroyed. Imagine if you were American and Mount Rushmore was destroyed, or the San Francisco gate bridge, or if you were Japanese and the Kyoto Castle was burned down, or if you were Indian and the Taj Mahal was burned down. How would you feel?

I really hope whoever did it is a Korean, but then I hope that it wasnt a Korean at the same time. Cause if it was someone from another country, I swear, theres gonna be a murder and a war. Koreans can be aggresive about defending their country. But then again, if it was a Korean, I'd be so disgraced that a Korean would burn down something like that. Seriously, sometimes when I see Koreans do stupid things (like Koreans at my school) or see Korean people being idiots, or Koreans making a bad name (like Cho and VT), I wanna cry.

Can't believe someone can do such thing.

Luckily, they can fix it. In 2006 they measured it and made detailed drawings, and according to this information they saw it's possible to rebuild it, though it'll take at least 3 years and will cost about 21039500 USD according to the article I read.

a Strong Point has been made.

only the wooden part was severely damaged and not beyond repair though the cost for repair are extreme. To think an ancient monument that survived the japanese invasion was destroy by some old man with a hard on for fire.....what a lame ending....

600 isn't that long, the gates around Xi'an China are ~2000 years old in most parts. Most old stuff range 1000+ years you even see 600 years in newer cities like Beijing.

Anyways sounds like some Pro-Japanese youth in Korea, they do crazy shit and think their samurais and crap.

Thank god you guys aren't American, or imagine who the scale of invasion next.

10000 years or 50 minutes, nothing part of history deserves to be burnt (except bush)

wow do we really care how old stuff in China is? I could care less if the Namdaemun gate was 50 years old or 5000 years old, its still an extremely important piece of history for Koreans. I don't care if your forbidden city or great wall of china is X years old. If someone detonated it, I'm sure you would feel just as bad.

The age of an ancient structure does not determine how sad or sorry you are. How old were the twin towers in new york city? how sad did americans feel? wow, you keep showing how narrow minded you are.

This shit is starting to annoy me, you post shit on a forum, people say something you don't particularly like and you say their narrow minded seriously don't post if you don't want different opinions.

True, both were sad days. though its nothing you should let get to you, the people who did it when and if they're caught should be punished. though the buildings that were destroyed were nothing like the thousands dead in that attack.

at the time, the loss of cinderblocks and steel were far less than the thousands dead.
