S/S has a much higher survivability rate the spear. There are a few reasons.
BR on a shield is a %. That means a BR 18 shield will block 18 hits out of 100. This gives you time to pot between taking damage.
Don't forget your BR passive from the Bichon tree.
Also castle wall gives you the physical defense that ints lack.
You have knockdown which has 50% chance of success, and you can spam 1 book after another.
Oh and lets say you block a hit that would have stunned you....Now you can keep fighting cause you weren't stunned.
Which would do better in PvP against the other with the same equipment/npc weapons? 85% spear vs 85% S/S
Ultimately it would come down to luck. Who knocks down, or stuns first. Or maybe the magic defense skill from the hueksal tree might give them the advantage. But the 2nd book of castle shield increases your effective block rate to around 50%. This would reduce the chance of the spear user getting stun or knock back.
So obviously I am biased towards s/s, but hey I backed it up. I also know that hybrid spear is a very good build so to each his own.
Oh and you will have trouble running snow shield past 40%(lvl60) by being hybrid without shield.
