So, after getting rejected a few times as a call center agent, I'm motivated to improve my English, and as I find English courses a waste of time, I try to do that through my everyday life, watching movies with no subtitles(with english subtitles they're fairly easy, but I struggle to keep up with just the voice.. even though I understand youtubers perfectly, but not the movies, weird..), also translating any new word that I stumble upon, with a nice chrome extension that saves me from the hassle of going to google then to the translate page then copying the word, it also has a history of translations, looking back at what I translate, it's mostly not common everyday words.
Spoiler!

Ignore the arabic translation, but is any of them new to you?
and how good is your spoken english? most people who learn english from the internet have an almost fluent written english but bad spoken english as they rarely speak in english, wbu?

As someone born and raised speaking English, I know all those words.

I'd say I use pretty much any of them not very often though.

I honestly didn't know all of them.
Writing English is what I'm best at, even though my spoken English isn't bad either. At least it is good enough for people to understand me on my Gameplay channel on Youtube - so it can't be all that bad
*hopeful eyes* :sohappy:

Oh, and can you please send me a link to the Chrome extension you're using?

English isn't my first language, but I've always been good at it. What we were taught in high school and university was far to easy for me. My written English is worse than my spoken English, but it's fairly decent still. The only thing i struggle with is jargon.

People who aren't English generally think i'm from England. When I am in England people generally can't really link my accent to an English county.

To work on my Jargon a tad I generally check a few words and articles on http://www.businessdictionary.com/

Only a few in that list are unknown to me. Not my first language, started learning it in 3rd grade, but I've never actually had to learn it and English as a subject feels like a waste of time to me.
I also tend to think in English guite a lot lol.
My Estonian is also good and never had any problems with that either in school.
But my Russian on the other hand is pretty rubbish. Have been learning it since 6th grade, but compared to the rest of my class it's not bad. I don't even care about being able to speak it, should have chosen German because it would actually be useful for me, but meh.

You need to practice your verbal skills by talking to people on a daily basis. Although writing and reading English certainly does have its benefits, it's not the same as having a verbal conversation. My first language is English despite living in the Philippines for 14 years but when I moved to the US about a decade ago, I had to practice talking to people in English. I noticed a few things during the first month of practice just by calling up some of my friends in NY: 1. My sentences are spoken smoothly; I no longer stutter or pause mid-sentence while having a conversation. 2. My accent has greatly improved. I don't have a Filipino accent and after years of living here, I guess I did pick up a little NY accent naturally. But I still tend to enunciate some of my words (as opposed to a more slurred NY accent).

Also, learn idioms. Know what they mean and read a little bit about literary references that people use. Some idioms are rarely used during conversations and may sound awkward and a few can be thrown out there. It makes the conversations more fluid. If you have trouble with certain words, daily conversations certainly would help cover them at some point. Just don't forget to ask what they mean or to look them up later on.

And yes, I do know all those words.

Yup speaking the language definitely helps more than learning the more complicated words that people dont really use (stoic, advent) in conversations.
Same with spanish for me, i have learned more spanish at work (where all the chefs speak like only spanish) in 2 months than i have taking 4 years of English classes ~.~.

I dislike that Americans never really learn another language besides English.

I think I shall reteach myself Spanish. And then German. And then probably arabic or chinese. Cause you know, Muslims/chins be everywhere.

I already knew all of them.
I think I'm pretty good in writing English, but my spoken English is not so good anymore (I think it's still pretty good, but I didn't speak to anyone in English for a long time, and I feel it got worse).
English in school was always too easy.

No reason to learn anything other than English and maybe Spanish depending on what part of the US you're in.

Uhh you do know highschools do teach another language, right? Though it may not be like most countries where it's required to learn English since English is 'the global language' or something along those lines. Spanish and French are probably the top 2 that's taught in most high schools. There are a lot of people that learn another language, but it's not apparent.

I took Spanish 1 & 2(first semester) and knew it on a basic level, fast forward 6 years later, and I forgot it all.

That reminds me of myself, I took German 1 & 2 and I can't remember much at all since I never used it.
I could also say the same about 99% of all the useless garbage I was taught in HS.

Looking at the list most of those words are fairly common in the US. Elsewhere you'd probably never hear or see them.

That's what I was referring to. You learn it, read/say the words, than once you no longer need it you forget most of it.

^^key words there are once you no longer need it, you can hardly critise him for or anyone for that. I did french at school it wasnt until earlier this year i actually needed it and i live only a short distance from france on the train from england. When i was there i made an effort to learn what i needed to get by and be polite even remembered a bit from school but as i said seeing as i dont live near anyone who speaks french what use is it to me. i would like to learn some languages and go visit the places like Hong Kong as i met 2 girls who live there and was invited but they both talk good english i digress point been if someone dont need it, dont knock them for not knowing it, be offended when they go to that country and not make an effort.

Not trying to criticize anyone. Just saying it'd be nice if we actually had a need to retain the languages we learn.

How am I supposed to seduce a latina girl now?!?

I forgot it, because I didn't apply it to my daily life at the time. Unlike English where you can see it's used almost everywhere now. I regret not going 3-4 years of Spanish, because how much it can apply to me now.

I understand what you mean now, but the way you said it originally sounded very ignorant. To answer your question is with your D. Just whip it out.
