Celebrating our differences and elevating a persons/groups differences over another person/group is two entirely different things.
You shouldn't need a particular month to celebrate your past. You should do that every day. After all, if us "middle class suburban white boy's" can do it, I'm sure you'll be fine too.
i agree that black history month is irrelevant, obviously not racist. But it seems like some people have a problem with it not because it attempts to limit the successes of black Americans (against a shitload of prejudice) to one month, but because it dedicates and celebrates those people

My response was written before your post, but as i said; You see it as black people trying to make themselves seem all important, i see it as people celebrating black people who struggled for and achieved success in this country while being seen as sub-human

Some things that made sense when It was first introduced don't make much sense now especially in a world that is slowly merging socially as one and that is not paying much attention to it's differences based on skin color.... black history month may bring about recognition of black people's contributions to society but it also promotes separatism which doesn't help but hinders....
Human history month would be more appropriate because at the end of the day every race can and has contributed to our development whether it was realized or not... Human history month would be a great holiday.... Especially if the world took a month off from work/school etc... Those that have to work on that month (fire dept/cops/doctors etc) can take the next month off...

White guilt. A week or a day would've sufficed like what Puerto Ricans, Filipinos, or even certain professions get but because of the whole slavery, segregation, and lynching thing, America had to make it a month. So there you have it, white guilt.

I disagree with this.
You act as if because I'm white, I enslaved you're ancestors. And therefore, should feel guilty about it. Which, to be honest, has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.
Holding people accountable for the sins of their fathers is retarded. Not to mention, expecting the ancestors of these "fathers" to feel guilty for something they never did.
On a similar note, YOU have not been enslaved at any time during your life. Nor were your parents. So quit having a chip on your shoulder over something that both of our ancestors did, or did not, do.
And again, I'm not a fan of slavery, never have been, never will be. But if you looked into Slavery. Slavery started when African tribes would form raiding parties to raid their neighboring tribes, to kidnapp African's so that they could sell them and make a profit. African's opened the flood gate to slavery. The rest of the world simply took it to the next level. If you want to be mad about something, or expect someone to feel "guilty" then I suggest you feel guilty that the whole issue of slavery was a direct result of YOUR ancestors actions. And no one elses.

Turks enslaved my people for ~400 years, so they should have Serb's month in Turkey? Or they should feel guilty? Or we should just hate them for that? No, forgive and forget. One can not be blamed for what his ancestors did.

Here's a suggestion: every year, during black history month, read a book dealing with the black experience in America. I just finished Frederick Douglass' Narrative of his life. Its about 80 pages and costs a dollar on Amazon. Next year, I'm going to read Eldridge Cleaver's Soul On Ice. Though I'm not jewish, every year I tell my kids the story of Hannukah and we light candles. For me, things like BHM and religious holidays are just a way to try and understand other people's experiences and hopefully enrich our own.
And then there's St. Paddy's Day where I just celebrate alchohol.

its just a color. The only country where black ppl act and talk different is in the states that ive noticed. They just never adapted or dont want to lol.
