I just ordered a new computer with an AMD Phenom quad core 64-bit processor in it. Is anyone running SRO on a 64-bit machine? Is it even compatible? I've never run a 64-bit machine before, and from what I understand some applications won't run on 64-bit.
The computer didn't come with an operating system, and I will probably be running some distribution of Linux, probably Ubuntu if there's a 64-bit version. I can always install 32-bit if needed...

ok your cpu is 64 bit not your OS. so you can put a 32(X86) bit OS on there and it will run fine it will still use ll cores and all that jazz but you just cant add more then 3.5 to 4 gb of ram.
i would recommend just getting a copy of XP pro 32(X86) bit so everything runs smooth.
64 bit OS is just not worth it yet.. soon but it is not there yet.

I've been running SRO on a dual-core Athlon 64-bit processor since I started. If you mean the OS, then I don't have any realworld experience with a 64-bit OS.
IIRC, yes, there is an Ubuntu 64-bit version. Hope that helps.

I run sro on Vista Home Premium 64-bit, no problems at all. And a 64-bit os IS worth it if you plan to use more than 3.5GB of ram... I run 8GB, 64-bit is a must.
Go 64-bit and be prepared for the future.. most of the 64-bit incompatible drivers and things have been sorted out.. Unless you're trying to use a joystick or printer (etc) from the 80's..lol.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Since the computer has no OS yet, I can install anything I want on it. However, I won't be installing Windows XP/Vista on it at all. It will run Linux, but I wanted to make sure SRO can run on a 64-bit OS before I installed a 64-bit OS. The system only has 2 gigs of RAM, but I can easily upgrade that at some point. If memory serves, it's upgradeable to 8 GB.
It'll be some time before I even get it installed. The computer is still in pieces inside the boxes it was shipped in. I don't have a computer desk built yet to put the thing on, so I have to get that done, and then build the computer, then install the OS and software on it. Then I can install SRO and actually get back into playing.
All this will have to wait until after my daughter's first birthday party in the end of March.

Well i run sro in gentoo linux in 64 bit with ati drivers and wine 64 bit too, and it run just fine, better performance that on windows. If you plan to use linux i recommend that u use the new ext4 filesystem, no need to worry if a program is 64 compatible or not because they all are

I run on a 64-Bit and yes it's very possible. All it does is automatically runs it in 32-bit compatibility. You'll notice in Task manager that it has a *32 next to it. Same with all other programs only using 32-bit.

Plus, if you need a bash script, I can always paste it here for you to auto install everything that you want. Also, sure Gentoo is generally leaner than ubuntu when you do a cli install, but the repository is smaller and slower released updates. I'd rather just do arch linux instead of Gentoo.

It seems to take a bit longer than a distro like Kubuntu. I just got done downloading Kubuntu 64-bit now. I think I read somewhere that it uses ext4 by default, not sure though. I don't get over to EB all that much, and when I do, I don't read every thread. I don't remember seeing the screenshots of the 8GB/16GB systems the botters use. Granted, usually images are blocked for me on SRF when I browse from work during my breaks. @HawaiianMix - I'm not sure what cli install is for Gentoo. Commandline? Well according to bash.org, it only takes 3 commands to install Gentoo. I've never tried arch linux before. Edit: Well I'm using Gentoo now It's working great! It's nice being able to walk through Hotan and Jangan without much of any lag.
