Hey, do any of you know anything about overclocking? I was thinking about overclocking my GPU a bit, I saw this video of this one guy here (beware, his voice is annoying as shit): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jqv_eIl0Hnc&fmt=18 and he overclocked his GPU an ASSLOAD, holy crap, you should see what he does. He says it's fine though as long as his fans are max and he doesn't see artifacts (though he'll see a few when he puts it on max settings).

I have questions though, how safe is overclocking? I figure it should be fine if you don't always do it as severely as this guy and turn up your fans, but is it safe to do on laptops? 'Cause laptops have pretty crappy fans to begin with, their power sources usually aren't as good (though I'm not sure it makes that big of a difference), but the real thing is that everything is so closely spaced, so if one thing gives off alot of heat, everything else can feel it too.

So, do you recommend overclocking? Are the results noticable? Worth it? Safe? And especially, how recommended is it on laptops (I only own a laptop)?

Well, it seems overclocking laptops is impossible unless you overclock the CPU, but my cpu's a badass to begin with so I don't need to.
So nevermind my questions, I'll keep this topic up anyways though incase anyone wants to talk about it.

you don't overclock cause you can, you overclock if you have to and for a laptop, i don't recommend overclock imo.

Overclocking is safe but the main thing is to monitor your temps.

Main thing you want to watch as others said is temperature although heat isn't the only thing. Overclocking lowers life expectancy of whatever it is you're overclocking and you can do damage if wrong settings are applied (voltage is a tricky one). With stock cooling I don't recommend any real overclocking because stock coolers usually suck - CPU wise anyway, GPU aftermarket cooling is hella expensive.

Laptops is usually a no no. Especially a manufactures laptop like HP/Acer as their BIOS are coded in such a way that do not allow overclocking.

Unless you know how to overclock, you shouldn't be doing it.

I think overclocking my computer isn't a good idea because it's a laptop, I know perfectly well how to overclock though, I've done it, just never on a laptop.

Right now I'd need to overclock my CPU though, and since the fans are right next to it I dunno if I could or not.
The fact it's a lapop keeps me from doing it though.

Well if its your first time, i recommend you just playing with the base speed some, but what card are you going to OC? Though...dont touch the voltage yet, best bet is to read some good credible FAQs about OC to get a good base knowledge. The voltage is a bit tricky and im still hesitant to do it. But it does lower life expectancy due to excess heat...and it also voids most warranty's.

well overclocking is not as easy as you think. Its prolly like a 2 week process before you hit your max on how much you can OC your puter. You have to gradually OC in small number in the mhz. Then you have to watch your memory as well...because that can affect your performance on your puter too. Depending on your motherboard....you may have a desktop app that helps with OC your gpu and memory and watch the temps without messin with the bios directly.

But this is in consideration you are OC a desktop. For laptops I do not recommend doing this.

I've overclocked an old computer a year or two back in a computer class, but I did it on bios I believe (or a CD which looked alot like it). I never knew that a program existed where you could do this which interested me because this way you could gradually find your maxes easily because you don't have to restart your computer every time to increase the clock speed.

But whatever, stop talking about me now, I don't want to do it anymore.

hahhaa, i just posted a thing about my old $1,900 pc being overclocked, don't do it, you'll come home and smell sumthin burnin, and u'll find out its ur pc cuz the plastic on your fan melted *tear*

All the time and energy spent into trying to overclock your computer could be easily avoided simply be upgrading your memory and graphics card.

Its amazing how far people wanna go to avoid paying a small price for something.

lol my pc was nearly top of the line then, i just wanted a lil bitm ore power but lol, JUST DON'T OVERCLOCK

My GPU's fine, it can run crysis on medium graphics (that's amazing for me, lol), but my cpu is shit, so if I play, I get like 9 or 10 FPS (although technically my computer is below min specs, only 1.9GHz but I think you need 2.2GHz)

My Q6600 starts at 2.4 Ghz and I overclocked it in less than an hour to 3.6 running stable. I downclocked to 3.2 and it's now running in 1:1 ratio with my ram..Overclocking isn't a cheap way out of buying something. It's the smart way to AVOID buying something.

Quick note: Can't buy a 3.6ghz quad cpu either way soo..upgrading wouldn't work.
