It's a given now. You make a successful and decent MMO, it will be compared to WoW. Developers know this... So why aren't they trying to be innovative?
What irks me is the lack of creativity. Competition should fuel innovation, what is the point of directly copying, especially if it's going to suck more than the original? None of the MMOs trying to copy WoW are even close to how good it is. I would love if game publishers want to copy Blizzard's game support and WoW replay value. But don't copy the game!
Warhammer Online. Of course we will see the similarities. Unfortunately for Warhammer, it's true. Warhammer world was around years before Warcraft was and in fact Warcraft is the imitation in this case. But Blizzard had the foresight to develop an MMO before them. Warhammer has different game style focusing on World PVP rather than competitive 2v2, 3v3 arena and PVE bass raiding. I don't think Warhammer is a clone and but the comparisons will be made for obvious reasons.
Runes of Magic was the first. But it's a clunky version and feels sluggish. It's not a WoW replacement, but for a free game, it's decent.
Allods Online. Alright this game is free to play, so not like WoW subscription play. But there are a lot of elements that are similar, but it does take less system resources than WoW and colors are not as vibrant or pastel. Overall for a free game this may be the best option for your WoW alternative.
Aion has graphics different from WoW. But it's no better or more advanced. Don't kid yourselves, it runs on an ancient and outdated CryTek engine. It's a poor excuse for Lineage 3 which was slated to run on the UT3 engine, (DROOL!) I won't bash it much. Plenty of other reviews out there that exemplify how this game falls on it's face.
Alganon takes the cake. Just youtube Alganon and you'll say you gotta be kidding me. This game was originally named Asheroth... WTF... There original excuse was that Asheroth was a concept born before WoW existed. Who are they kidding, Azeroth has been around since 1992. Fuckheads. This is a P2P game and has absolutely no shame. There are hair cut designs in the creation screen copy pasted from WoW. There are sceneries that are copied and pasted. This game may be the one if successful Blizzard may go after. It's just plain wrong. I suggest don't support this one, it's just gross. Here is a screenshot and you'll see what I mean.
Watch the video, even the chat box is the copy paste. The menu system is the same also as you change the interface and so on. Check out the status and buff icons on the top right. Interesting ghost mode when you are dead running back to the body? It's just plain wrong!
Was thinking it could be that they are trying to make a point. That WoW doesn't take much or budget to create? I'd agree, the only thing that would take time in WoW to develop are the boss fight scripts. Which I don't think should take too long?

Wello this is the second comment i see from you related to mmos and i must say you have some lousy opinions. No, aion is not like Wow and neither is allods, you would know that if you spent any time playing them instead of being a troll. All in all i am amazed at how idiots go around tagging everything as a WoW clone and ignoring any sort of unique set of features/gameplay.

They may have designed the game to run on the shittiest computers out there, but it still doesn't make it a good game in my eyes. The game may have progressed better than any MMORPG out there, but I never liked the 'feel' of the game.
As for the WoW Clones.. companies out there want to make a game easily. How to make a game easily? Rip off every idea you can possibly think of and remake it. Remake of WoW can be easily done because of the huge amount of stuff it has packed in it over the years. Many cheap, young, poor, and w/e else you can think of would be scratched to games like that. Free that is. If you're charging then you're retarded.
