I have been working on making a private server for a few weeks now and progress is getting up there. I was wondering. Is there still a community out there for a Salvation/Venture type of server?

meaning somewhat skill balanced. and the death penalty for botting. Would people on SRF be intrested in a server like this ? Old job system. And a quest based leveling. ( with the option to just grind up there to ofc)!

Mostly because things change too much or too little.
Changing too much will make the people who joined the server because of what it initially offered leave. Changing too little will make people bored and sad that their feature requests never come into live.
The legit community will probably be able to fill a server with about 100 people online if you get them all.

What kind of features would keep players in you guys think ?

Personaly i'm thinking a heavly quest based grinding system and quest or coin based gear system. With pimping gear mainly from the NPC with stones. Wich would require you to trade.

Long story short, SRF/ex-SRF are the only legit community. The server would probably peak at 100 players max. Unless you've got enough cash to pay for the server out of your own pocket + DDoS protection + agent server exploit fix, don't bother.

EPVP is the main source for players, which aren't legit. You can try a legit server, but it will fail like the rest.

Could you explain that more detailed? Actually I hate questing. For me pt grinding was most fun to level in Silkroad always. I only did quests when I was really bored or it was necessary to do them. Pt Play brings so much more interaction in the gameplay. Everyone soloing and doing quests wouldn't be fun for me.

Also, everyone wants "different" features. Everyone has another idea on how "his perfect server" should look like - e.g. I prefer low rates, however most ppl prefer higher rates.

What about making a eu only server where you can only pick one tree for your char? That would require pt play and "balancing" classes wouldn't be necessary because each euro class has its special role that is needed. With rising caps from time to time this should work quite well imo. You could start with 60 cap for example and release a new cap from time to time.

Now some may say that it would get quite boring after a while to play one class only. You could implement a quest or dungeon that gives the player a Stat/Skill-Reset scroll.

Also combining jobbing with farming sp would be funny imo. For successful trades and robberies you would get rewarded with sp scrolls and gold. Only problem is that there should be a level restriction so that a higher level player can't farm his sp scrolls on lower players.

What do you think about those ideas? If you want I can add more ideas later.

I think it would even work if you could change build at any time. Could be interesting.

This would be as simple as selling sp-reset scrolls and int/str reset scrolls at an NPC for a couple of mills of gold.

I do not know if a Euro-char-only server would be able to attract enough players. It would obviously increase party play, which is what most people enjoy (NOTE: Not all people like party-playing).

I will have to over-all agree with Valkyrie, though. Especially about the part of what is fun in Silkroad. For me, grinding has already been what is fun - not doing quests. Just as Valk, I only do them if I really need to!

I understand that and I know not everyone will like my suggestions. Though the problem that usually occurs at a Eu/Chn server usually is the balancing thing. Ppl want chn chars to be equal to euro chars to compete in terms of Pt Play and PvP. So it would be easier to make a Eu only server with 1 tree only. Sure, 1vs1 PvP would be kinda pointless then - I prefer group pvp anyway :) .

If you have a lot of time to gather people and actually play / pvp - then yes.
For someone like me, who only has an hour or two every now and then (at least right now), group pvp is not really an option, and nor is party playing (even though I really enjoy party playing!).

My ideea would be to have low rates at 80-85-90 cap. 5x to 10x max. then for the people who don't like the grind. ( I personaly love to grind ) There would be quest lines that give good options to level up that way. However it wouldn't be short quests.

Sounds great.
But you'll have to remember not to make the quests all too good. If they are the way fastest way to level, then some people who would otherwise had been party-grinding, will chose to take the quest way instead.
And that in return means fewer players left who can start a party.
It is a fine line, really. Because if you make the quests will still have to be worth the effort.

I would love to play on a legit only server, but not ch only.

Things that would keep me:
No changes to grinding areas unless it's a completely new area
Medium rate(150x maybe)
bonuses for reaching the cap level, like being able to make a new character and it be higher than lvl 1(maybe 60 or so on a 80 cap)
Challenges or events for silk possibly or some other bonus.
*Any custom edits must be professional.. not like the spiderman and mini yarkan pets...

That's what would keep me interested anyway

150x Rates on what kind of server ? 150x rates are extremly high imo even in 120 cap server.

Low rates, some amazing gearing up system with short, long and very long term goals. All that would need to be in tip top shape right from the start. No prices cutting at any point. Lenghty hype building process, some good features that you can use to advertise. Either copy salvation balance or dont touch anything except black res. It's all about getting people in and keeping them interested. Dunno if it's even possible to get enough legits in tbh.

I'd say it's not possible to get enough legits or people interested in playing SRO the legit way anymore. The server will have peaks of 100 players and that would be it. Eventually, they'll get bored too and quit.

You'd have to have a correct 13d server i think.. to attract people.

I'm telling you, don't bother with this unless you have $$$$$$ in the bank to pay for your server out of pocket every month.
Then again you'd only need 50 server slots. 8)
A legit server will not last long, not anymore.

All you need is bots and pay2win to attract people, throw 1000x xp rates, 500x drop rates and 50x alch rate in there and you got yourself a popular server/cash cow. That ain't want anybody here wants though

I have the money in the bank to pay for the server everymonth. At most i'm hoping to break even with the server

I want to make a server that will be enjoyed by legits. And i've been looking at the other private servers mainly Salvation and Venture. And the simple reasons they went down for is Attitude and Constant skill changing. Wich i won't do. However regular content updates are part of my plans.

It's a sad fact that any server anyone here would play won't last longer than a few months, hosting is just too expensive, and the people that keep all the other servers alive only like the previously mentioned absurd rates.

thats assuming you just have old legits from srf. expand away from epvp and all that crap, and advertise as you would any website! you can make a website/forum today with 5 hits, then within a month have 10,000 a day. same applies for the game, appeal to new players, as isro did for all of us years ago!
and btw, server costs are easy to pay, a half decent website alone can pay for the servers alone with advertising!

That depends on how expensive your server is, and if you want a good DDOS protection they sure aren't cheap!
Also, a website with, say, 10.000 monthly visitors wouldn't make enough off of advertising spots alone to keep the server up. At least not unless all 10.000 visitors all agree to click the said advertisements.

If you want to really earn money off of advertising you would have to create something more than just a private server website where people download the game, create accounts and check the forum.
You would have to create a portal of sorts. Just as you said: Something like rev6 - but for private servers.
I highly doubt it is worth all the time, though.

I don't think that would work, our monthly costs for Venture (with only one running AS/GS) were around € 500-1000 monthly, there is no way you could gather that much money with people just visiting your site, the average player doesn't even check the website daily, even if you'd add an armoury and stuff like that (was planned for old venture).

You could run it on donations however, but running a pserver is not as easy as it looks. While you might think it's just buying a server and running the files, that's not the truth. You'd need to work on it daily to keep it updated (thankfully we had perry and qynchou who work on sro daily anyway), you need to keep your server secure (no, googleing windows firewall will not really bring you far) and most important, you need to take care of DDoS attacks and exploits (a reverse proxy will solve most of your DDoS problems, but costs 3000$ at least), however there is not a single server that has fixed all the exploits, so you can count on going down at least 4-5 times a day (this didn't happen on venture thanks to our security system, but I don't think recreating this or a system like it is an option for any of the 'new' silkroad server)

So all combined, I'd advise you to think again before you try to open a server, we had some of the best people in the silkroad community and we didn't last that long :(
