You could also go for bard or warlock if you like it. There are more options, but these are the most common. Subclass cleric will greatly improve your survivability; Warlock will greatly improve your damage; Bard will greatly improve your speed.
Cleric is generally the best one according to most people, but in the end, the truth is that it depends utterly on what you prefer.

Sub Warlock if you want to dominate other non-holy word build in pvp.
Cleric for versatility: Tanker, resser, buffer, supporter, etc
Bard is not really recommended, since you dont need noise, and there are other alternatives to speed.
Im a level 89 ( 90 soon ) 1H/Cleric and i love it. Not a super killer, but a very tough supporter and the ultimate tanker.

There are other things about bard, such as MP recovery, tambours and dances, and well, nobody actually buys speed for grinding, and bard with moving march + noise can greatly improve your grinding speed. Each subclass (bard, warlock or cleric) is different from one another, he should choose it based on what he prefers. Each one has it's very own benefits, and they are not similar at all.

actually warrior sub bard if on a server like venus is an sp easy way to help garuntee parties as long as you're not a noob like unamed or gothrickz who never tank and when they do they suck at it and afk bard the whole time. But sub bard lets you tank or bard if you get tambour/dances mana cycle and such if both tank spots are full, and helps out with solo, it has its viable reasons at least here. Party dead servers still good for solo lets you move around faster between mobs and warrior grinds slow enough to begin with, solo my 42 warrior about the same rate of xp per minute as my 72 wiz.
Of course i loved sub lock but honestly in most pvp/ ctf i never had a good opportunity to use it, and stuck to 1 hander alone most of the time, sub lock actually is good for solo as well, debuff a giant or champ, throw the dot on that causes bleed on the giants to help you deal more dmg, since no axes its a decent way to get bleed on.
Subcleric can make you very hard to kill how ever, of course don't take off your sword if you got people buffed you might kill them doing that, the power to res is a very good asset for group pvp or grinding. The last man to fall with the power to res his team, that kinda speaks for itself. 1 vs 1 you can bless and recovery division, and you get holy word that helps alot.

Well, when u wanna be a real Tank. I have to say go cleric. In group pvp its verry usefull, when u are the last one standing u can ress everyone. When u aint buffing ints, U can also use a heal sometimes and absolutes to pwn LT wizzys in 1 hit and ofcourse U have bless. Where in group pvp holy spell + pills/cleric clearing fxcks u up as a tank/warlock. Altough reflect and panic are really nice. But still when ur buffing it doesnt matter alot which sub you have, altough as a cleric u can kinda save the day.
Also altough u pwn non holy spell players less fast then a tank/warlock, ur opponents death kinda is inevitable, massive survivability combined with the luck off verry high burst dmg with critz makes tank/cleric one of the best 1on1 chars.
Well choose the one u liek the best, I really favour tank/cleric but I cant deny tank/lock is really good to.
