Well, My friend tells me that if you level up (your skill) then you get less SP off of monsters. And if you keep them all low or not even level up you get more.
I love this sort of stuff (investing Etc.) but i don't want to do it if i'm just going to be wasting my time,
Is it true. Or is he trying ttrick me.

Its true with your mastery skill, but normal atk/passive skills its not, you get a 10% increae/decrease in exp/sp exp with your lvl and your max mastery lvl.
Say you are lvl 10, if you mastery lvl is 10, you are getting 100% exp/sp exp
If you lvl to 11, and keep your highest mastery only at 10, you get -10% exp, and +10% sp exp.
It only goes to 90% though, so with a 9 lvl gap you get -90% exp, +90% sp exp.

The highest Mastery lvl, Glaive, blade, bow, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Force, whichever one is the highest is the one that counts, so you could have all your masterys like 5 lvls lower with only 1 up to your lvl and you would get the most you can still.
