I'd keep the the wolf under level 20 just because it looks soo adorable. The charming action is so cute too (compared to the level 40 one).

Why stop at 20? Why not keep it at 39?

Is there a guide on potting, changing mode, summoning and desummoning wolves. I don't want to get one and get out there and screw up potting him (either not potting when I should or wasting a $2k pot when his HP is full)

SRF Wolf FAQ: http://www.silkroadforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=9101&highlight=wolf+guide

basically just pot your wolf like you would pot yourself (if you didn't use autopot. I usually pot mine (x-large recovery kit) if his HP gets quite low.

Also I read 1hp/3sec while NOT fighting - how much HP does it start with in level 1?

I think you're confusing HP and HGP (hunger points). HGP decreases at a constant rate of 1 per 3 seconds, no matter what the wolf's level is. He will always have the same max HGP at each level (someone correct me if I'm wrong). You just give him HGP potions (yellow pots from stables) to "feed" him.

Would anyone recommend taking it out to fight Manyangs the first time out or just let him get XP while you kill a few low levels? I only get 1 XP and 1 SP when fighting a Manyang but I suspect my wolf at level 1 would if he were fighting it would get way more.

Well wolves earn the same experience that a player would earn on a mob when the player has a zero gap. You can take the wolf out to any level mob as long as it is NOT aggressive. Even put your wolf into "defensive" mode via one of the buttons above your skill bar (see the faq I linked to above). Defensive mode prevents your wolf from attacking mobs, so they shouldn't attack him back. You could do mangyangs to start, but he'll level a lot quicker if you fight non-aggro mobs at your level.

You all might have convinced me it is time to buy a wolf with all my hard earned 1mill.

I havnt used a wolf for a long time my last wolf was lvl 59 i sold it because i got annoyed with keeping an eye on its health.

I might use a wolf again if they add a auto pot feature for wolfs otherwise its too much trouble for a little extra damage on mobs.
