This point has been addressed many times - upgrading current servers is very costly and more "dangerous" than simply adding more servers.
The problem is that all the data on the current servers must be migrated to another new server. The dangerous comes with actually transferring the data. There could be corruption somewhere and wipe out a lot of stuff. Actually fixing that is next to impossible because it's hard to actually tell where problems are until someone reports it.
There's a lot more to this issue, but if it were as simple as it seems to be, JM would have already done it.
Well it depends on what upgrade they do. If they just upgrade the processor, or add more processors, or increase RAM, then no data migration would be necessary. Now if they upgrade hard drives, then yes, they'd have to migrate data.
I do agree with the original poster. If they upgrade a server that can handle 5,000 players at a time, and the new upgrade allows 30,000 players to log on, then 30,000 players WILL log on. I can only imagine how chaotic the game would be with that many more people signed on, especially in confined spaces like the caves.
