thing you really do with that laptop is play SRO, install Ubuntu on it, install wine, and install SRO. Your graphics will work MUCH better. :)

You could install Ubuntu on a USB thumbdrive and run everything from there so you don't have to get rid of anything on your hard drive. Portable SRO FTW!

Disclaimer: I've only used the Linux + wine + SRO setup on computers with an nVidia card, even an older GeForce FX5200 card. I'm not sure how well it will work on other types of cards. Could be worth a try, especially if you go the bootable USB route.

Yesssssssssss!!!!!! I'm very interested please share :D

btw... after playing does your thumb drive gets hot?

Tuts plox??? :D

There's a discussion thread about running SRO on Ubuntu here on SRF in the guides and tutorials section: http://www.silkroadforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=94083&hilit=silkroad+on+ubuntu. It should help get you up and running if you want to actually install it all on your computer or laptop.

As for loading it all on a USB bootable thumb drive, check out unetbootin. Once you install that on your computer (it's just a small application) it will let you pick from a list of Linux operating systems, including Ubuntu, and automatically set up a USB thumb drive for you, including making it bootable.

Once that is done, reboot your computer with the thumb drive still plugged in. Then you can install wine, then use wine to install SRO. Perhaps an actual tutorial is in order. I'll see what I can come up with.

Keep in mind that thread is a bit old, at least the first part of it. Granted, I've only tried SRO on a bootable thumb drive on nVidia graphics systems, so I can't say for sure if it would work on ATI or others. Best I can say is give it a shot. At the very least, you'll have a bootable Linux thumb drive that you can use.

Perhaps since that Silkroad on Ubunto thread, maybe ATI released better drivers. You'd have to check their website and try it out. nVidia FTW I guess :)

Well I'm making a pk2 edit and one of the extra functions is show the GM console. With it you can make the wire mode (no textures loading), disable the ground textures, the sky textures and some stuff more for make the client uses less PC resources.
Example of what I mean:

Wire:

Sky+Ground:

There are guides around the internet for enable the GM console (if you don't/can't wait my pk2). The comands are:
/sky = Disable sky textures
/ground = Disable ground textures
/wire = Wire mode

Have fun

I bet if you just install the client on a flash drive in general it would run faster, you would only need a 4gig one and theyre pretty cheap now if you dont have one, it would prevent your hd from having to work so much and it would load a lot faster b/c it is on flash memory.

That's just stupid, mount and load files from flash drivers are slow and requieres a lot of CPU usage.

Thanks PR0METHEUS! the rotating brown-out just ended and i'm gona test it tonight! :D

@kaperucito i saw your pics in kSro that you post a while back... the thread can be seen in my first reply, 1 page.

btw i just want to confirm how much CPU and RAM usage have been free once you have type the wire command?

if Ubuntu works in my Laptop i'm soo gona test that GM Console :D

@Mcclane
a friend of mine has a SanDisk 8gig thumb drive and he happens to play SRO there. He ends up Thumb Drive over heats and most of us saw that the welds inside all melted. The only thing that is wrong about it, is that he only played it for 40 mins+.

i may say a big NO. But thanks for your idea!

Certainly flash chips themselves operate faster than spinning hard disk platters with moving heads, where you have to account for spinup, spindown, seek times, etc. You also have to look at the bus speed. Are you comparing USB 1.1 to IDE? USB 2.0 to eSATA? Firewire to IDE? You can have the fastest hard drive or solid state disk on the market, but if it's connected to a slow bus, you're out of luck.
