It's been a long time since i have played SRO and after just fixing my desktop ( needed to take out some falty RAM ) i decided to give it a go again. So i just installed it ( still haven't changed from windows mode etc ), logged into my old account on venus and messed around with the graphics. Now i was in hotan, although the server was only 2400 odd according to rev6, i didn't experience any lag at all with detailed shadows. System specs and pic are as follows.

2.4 dual core AMD
1 gig DDR2 RAM
Nvidea 7600
Ubuntu 8.10

Now before i re installed it, i was running the same system with 2 gig DDR2 ram and windows XP yet i could not handle detailed shadows. Is it ubuntu that has caused the change? Or has joymax simply fixed detailed shadows and no one told me about it?

Oh thankyou for the the reply. It's been a while since i've played so i wasn't too sure what was the cause for it. It's good to hear they actually fixed detailed shadows as opposed to it just being linux, gives me a bit more incentive to dual boot.

I was serious-- I just kinda felt like talking like a retard.

Ubuntu does seem to have some promises in hand, though I've been able to run detailed shadows on my XP without problems, except for Hotan.

Sorry, I just wanted to sound retarded. I tried too hard :S

Well probly both made a improvement, but linux change in the past couple of month have been pretty awsome ^ ^ in the xorg-server and graphic drivers, and its getting even wayyyyyy better with the new improvements comming in summer with the 1.7 version. i play in gentoo using ati and compiz activated and it runs faster than in windows---FK DUAL BOOT

I can tell by the pixels that this is shooped. Nice try.

I don't really get any fps 'lag' with detailed shadows on, but I do notice a jump in frames when I have it on or off. Still the same for me.

I don't know if Joymax did any detailed shadows fixing, but Ubuntu (or any Linux I'd assume) definitely makes detailed shadows work a lot better. With my old desktop:

AMD Athlon XP 3200+
512 MB DDR PC2700 RAM
nVIDIA FX 5200 AGP 128 MB graphics card

in Windows XP, I had to run the game on "Low" graphics (but could set draw distances to 3 or 4) in order to get the game to be playable. When I installed Ubuntu to play SRO, I was able to set graphics to "High" with every feature turned on including detailed shadows. The only thing I turned off was water reflection.

On that system, with Ubuntu, and high graphics settings, I didn't have much lag out on a grind. It did lag like crazy in Hotan and other towns when crowded, but that was more because of the 512 MB RAM than anything else. Detailed shadows still worked.

I have SRO installed on an Ubuntu-bootable USB thumb drive (info in my sig) that I can run on any system I want. I played it a bit on a core 2 duo with an integrated nvidia and 2 GB ram, and I get almost no lag in hotan on high graphics and detailed shadows.

I can't wait to try it on my new system when I get it built (it's sitting in boxes right now). AMD Phenom X4 9500 quad-core (64-bit), 2GB DDR2-800 corsair, nVIDIA GeForce 8200 integrated. I suppose it could be better, with extra RAM, but it's a quad core :-D and Ubuntu certainly doesn't need as much RAM as XP does. 2GB shouldn't be too bad.
