I am a bit baffled though.. Does Rev6 have access to all the SRO servers? Are they in fact part of the JoyMax Marketing Strategy? How come they can post stats of all servers, data on all players, data on guilds, etc..
Can someone who is more knowledgeable care to explicate?
access to all the sro servers: No
Are they in fact part of the JoyMax Marketing Strategy: Most likely not
there was a notice many months ago by joymax that rev6 is not to be trusted lol
How come they can post stats of all servers, data on all players, data on guilds, etc..:Rev6 has created its own bot which works via rerouting all packet traffic through their program. This bot is free, people could just download it and use it. (controversial to their forum rules) Their bot reads out information about players that surround the player that is using the rev6 bot. This data is being sent to rev6, thats how they update their statistics. So everyone who is using rev6 bot is contributing to updated stats. In the beginning rev6 used to have its own characters standing in towns to scan for people and stats, I am assuming this is not necessary anymore because their bot probably does this.
They also have created a clientless bot for people who want to make goldbots, but this project is not public so there aren't many information one can gather without either cracking access or paying for it - but one could assume these bots might update their statistics as well.
Legit or not - bot users provide the stats which bot users and legit users use to inform themselves. If one would go for arguments, one could say srf is pathetic for even tolerating the use of rev6 lmao.. but I dont really want to go there

Rev6's entire marketing strategy is to get people just like you and me to visit their website.
(and sell their clientless bot to a limited amount of people) They get paid for you clicking advertisements or just seeing them. So how do they get many unique visitors? Server stats are the interesting thing here. They may change, so people come again and again

lolz
oh what I forgot: how can they tell the server capacity?
debugging the client to see what happens when you press the "Select Server" Button will reveal how to access this list. This list contains also whether a server is "easy" "populated" or "full". Those who have changed their media.pk2 fonts to korean etc. probably have noticed that there can be an additional status called "full". These statuses are calculated from the number of players in the server at the moment. So via debugging one could extract that code and write your own little program that tells you how many people are online at the moment. That should give an idea how rev6 did it.
Note: debugging is usually not allowed
a forum will just expand their popularity and amount of unique visitors who will also take a look at the server stats
(and the advertisments yay!)sorry for long text, would have written pm but was not possible
