It was science fiction before, but now it's really happening, Young Skywalker: The US Navy and Air Force are going to install liquid-cooled, solid-state lasers in combat airplanes. Laser turrets designed to defend the planes by shooting incoming threats like surface-to-air missiles and rockets. Seriously. The above is an official concept image by DARPA, but integration is happening this year, with real firing tests coming in 2014.
The USAF has been playing with lasers in planes for a while. They worked to create the the highly successful—but ultimately shelved—Boeing YAL-1 Airborne Laser Testbed. Remember Reagan's Star Wars? This was one of the few technologies that we got to work outside those 3D animations that scared the Soviets so much.
But that was a huge megawatt-class chemical oxygen iodine laser designed to take down intercontinental ballistic missiles and other surface-to-surface weapons. That's why it required a 747 to ferry it around. Read More Here

This has been around for a while, finally getting implemented I guess but is not the cool "ups I just cut you in half" laser we want = /

Seen a documentary on this a few years back... Looks cool but probably used as a last line of defense (an extra counter measure) since it's preferable to intercept missiles from a distance where you can't physically see them....And because of that this technology might just be confined to short range defense... Don't think a laser would shoot as far as an interceptor missile can travel and still maintain it's integrity or the right trajectory seeing as laser shoots in a strait line..

They will be placed on the new carriers to replacing the old phalanx and instead it will be lasers and sea-rams
That's a very good application for it except they will more likely 'add' it to the ship's phalanx system rather than substitute the phalanx for it...at least until it's proven to be highly reliable.... Even though I think those sea rams are far more effective at reach and range for over-the-horizon interception....

But there are "serious potential negatives" that ought to be considered. Well, Bionic Parts may dysfunction, Your body may be rejecting the new part etc...

exceptions (breaking, rejecting) are not suitable as arguments. The real negatives you should be looking at are: - no feeling in parts - no more personal improvement. (you can't exactly exercise your metal muscles...) - aesthetic limitations (at least for now...)
There's surely more, but I can't think of anything quickly enough right now.

you're talking like the human body is flawless, yes if they will ever become real at the beginning they won't be perfect, but their evolution will surely be faster than the organic body's evolution, just enjoy your natural normal life, and when you're full of diseases waiting for your death, replace your body parts with better ones.

Meh... they're Just a few examples of the many things.
If you are using exceptions like malfunctioning as arguments you are assuming you are receiving a faulty product. But there's no point in arguing about a faulty product, because yes, of course it doesn't work well...
But you can break your arm just like you can break your robotic arm. Guess which one's fixed faster and doesn't hurt like a bitch though...

But sadly, you can afflicted with a bionic rejection. That's pretty serious, isn't it? And imagine... If your bionic leg fails, and you'll fall down the stairs... seriously, It can result in serious injury.
I don't know why do you debate. No one is going to chop his arm off just so it can be replaced with bionic. Bionic body parts are there to replace real body parts when they fail.

Airborne Laser isn't anything new. The Air Force Base near me has been testing this system for a few years now. Only recently was the idea scrapped as the laser wasn't as efficient as they hoped it would be.
It's funny seeing it picked up by another program and given another name. Still the same concept, and I don't think they can produce a powerful enough laser with the technology that we currently have.

Your prolly talking about that Laser on the boeing 747 ? Having enough power output seemed to be a huge problem for most tests i have no ideea how they will get it on planes but i could see lasers work on Nuclear powered carriers wich have a huge energy source
