So today as I changed my school schedule I noticed that there is an AP course called Latin:Vergil
I'm assuming this is a Latin language class, my question is, had anyone here taken Latin? Is it worth taking/ is it a useful language to learn?

Dead language. Completely useless unless you are a linguist.

You already failed the class. It's Carpe, not Carpa.

I took it 2nd year in university for one semester. It's not so bad as long as your really good at memorization and have your declensions down.

As for functionality, it somewhat helped me in my biology courses when it came to taxonomy and anatomy.

Dead language. Only useful if you're trying to sound like a pretentious prick. Exempli gratia, Hank Moody-wannabes.

We still use it for medical terminologies but whatever.

I completely agree, wtf are you going to use it for? no one uses it but the vatican. I mean its nice to learn something for the sake of learning but why latin out of all the other things more interesting like biology or astronomy.

I had Latin for 5 years and Ancient Greek for 1 year. I can tell you, it's not what you expect it to be. It's a dead language, so you don't get to hear it, you don't get to speak it and you don't get to write it. The only thing you do is learning all the grammar (which is a f*cking lot) and translating Latin texts. It's completely useless and it takes alot of time or else you'll fail it.

So unless you like to memorize a thousand grammarrules and translate a thousand of Latin texts, I'd suggest you leave it alone.

And it's Carpe Diem and not Carpa Diem.

Yeah and a lot of the different rules tend to make a lot of words exactly the same, making it a bit frustrating at times in longer sentences. I think English is more simple imo.

Take AP Chinese, AP Spanish, AP Chemistry, AP Bio, AP Macro or micro, AP Computer Science, AP Calc AB or BC, AP Physics (I forgot there was a B and C?), or AP Environmental Science. Those seemed to be the important ones I think, I might be missing some.

I've been told that it can be useful to study latin because it can give
a better understanding of french, italian and other roman languages.
However, if you're never going to use it then it is pretty much useless.
I took it for a year and decided i didn't need it.

Even in the medical (nursing, pharmacy, psychiatric, etc), where Latin terms are widely used, it really doesn't serve that much of a purpose. Mainly because most of the Latin words used keep repeating themselves and are pretty much used as an official "English" term to describe body parts or diseases ("Angina Pectoris," "Lateralis," etc)

I have, and it's not directly useful BUT it helps you learn other languages so much easier

useless language, even if you were to become a doctor, since in med school you will only get the medically useful words, not the rest.

If I were you I'd pick up spanish/italian/french because hey, girls always wanna go to Paris, Barcelona, Rome and Venice, right? Impress them. Think of your future.

Why did you think I'm running 4 languages and picking up some home courses for myself soon?

Of all the comments, this one.
I'll just quote every single word cin said, 'cept for the last sentence. :p

I've been studying Latin for six or seven years now, but it's not simply learnin' the grammar and translating stuff. We also read original works for a better understanding of our language (that is, Italian).

But if you're gonna take some scientific AP, it's not much of handy, except for what inky said.

Also, not only it is carpe diem instead of "carpa diem", but it was Horatius (Horace) who said it and not Virgil. >_>
