The whole license instead of product thing is a load of bullshit, but there's also just publishers that are total sell-outs and cheapskates that will go to any extent to get so more cash (Activision... EA to a lesser extent (although lately I feel they might be going in the right direction again).
That sounds pretty farked up.. if that's the case. Btw: how much profit does the publisher make?
Afaik they take all the money. The developers just get their usual salary... maybe a bonus if it sold well.
I'm not sure though, it depends on the publisher.
Valve lets the developers keep most of the money and they fund the market's progress. That's why they're generally respected by the commnunity.
Activision on the other hand penalizes it's signed developer teams if their games don't sell as expected (like Radical being pushed back to a supporting role).
Music publishers also make ridiculous money off the artists. Artist's actually make a lot less per sold disc if they've signed a contract. it's goes from $15 to like $0.30 or something like that. It's just that they get more popularity. It's still a hard market though. Only pop artists really make it, the rest are actually piss-poor.
And we all know how hard music publishers try to end the internet for the extra bit of cash... A fair amount of both developers and artists actually support piracy.
And lets not get started about apple... They'll sue anyone for just about anything...
